Who Are We?

The Colonial Fleet is a costuming group and network of friends that celebrates the re-imagined television series, Battlestar Galactica.

We're casual, we're laid-back, and we come together from different parts of the world to rally behind this phenomenal show. As a group, we're not interested in getting bigger just for the sake of getting bigger. We prefer stumbling into awesome, unpretentious motherfrakkers (whether online or in real life) who don't mind the thought of partying or bullshitting with us at the next con.

Sound good? That's what we said. Welcome to our rag-tag-fleet.

Our Beginnings

Our group was founded at Dragon*Con 2006 in Atlanta, GA. While many of the founding members met that weekend, it wasn't until the following evening, September 2nd, when the group was essentially formed. We traded contact infos. We shared drinks. We met a bunch of interesting characters and a few BSG actors and realized we had a good thing going. So why not keep it up, we thought?

We've been a big damn family ever since. It's a wonder we ever left the hotels.

Our Mission

Above all else, The Colonial Fleet is a family. Our main mission is to represent our beloved show at popular arts and sci-fi conventions by showing up in costume.

We don't kid ourselves - we have no time or interest in obsessing over our group's organizational details. If you search hard enough, you can find other BSG groups that would better suit your fancy if you're interested in joining a space militia. We're a rag tag fleet with talented people to keep us on task and plenty of good humor to keep us entertained over ambrosia and pyramid cards. We believe the best way to mature as a group, both in headcount and experience, is by making friends in person.

Our idea of recruitment is meeting friendly, laid-back, low-drama folks who want to be a part of our family. We love being social at cons and walking away having known awesome new people. Maintaining our friendships is our top concern - more important than trying to make a name for ourselves. On the bright side, that should happen naturally as long as Battlestar cast members are willing to return to Atlanta for a drink or two every year.

Amongst our hobbies are discussing new episodes, expanding our costuming knowledge, organizing our next gathering, spending too much money on fabric and plane tickets, drinking, getting others addicted to the show, and drinking some more. True to the spirit of Adama's rag tag fleet, we celebrate each other's differences and may argue like family from time to time. In our tiny heart of hearts, we actually care. A lot. We also look out for one another without getting all weird about it. Once in a while, we take sweet pictures...

In short, The Colonial Fleet is all about meeting new people and being sexy. We're not doing the survival of humanity a favor if we aren't having fun. So it all boils down to one thing: promise not to take things too seriously and we won't.
